Regular City Council meetings are at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month in City Hall at 3rd and Pearl Streets, City Hall Council Chambers. Come on by and let us know how we are doing. We won't even charge you for compliments!
CDBG Award
The City of Wayne has received a $433,000 grant from the State of Nebraska to enhance the trail system and drainage issues from the main gates of Greenwood Cemetery west to Bomgaars. This trail/sidewalk has been discussed for years by the City Council. This past summer the Council decided to apply to the State for some funds to complete this project. The opinion of cost by the engineer was $875,000, so only about 40% of this grant covers the estimated cost. The rest of the funds would likely come from sales tax revenue. The City will need to work in conjunction with the cemetery board to make this project a success as some of its property may be needed to adhere to ADA guidelines. I am sure the two entities can reach an agreement with a win-win solution. By the time this project gets designed and bid out for work, construction wouldn't happen until late 2023 at the very soonest and in all reality probably wouldn't get built until spring/summer 2024.
Perry Construction and Prairie Park Update
R Perry Construction is full steam ahead on the 144-unit apartment complex on East 4th Street. With the weather likely changing soon, it is still unknown how many foundations they will get in the ground by winter. The goal is to have one pad for sure and possibly two poured yet this fall. Perry plans to begin to start leasing as soon as March with an open date for one of the 36-unit buildings available in August 2023. The clubhouse and pool will likely be completed before this August date.
The Prairie Park grading plan is nearly completed by Olsson. Once that plan is final, Olsson will bid this project for a hopeful construction in spring 2023. This construction will set the grading on the park including elevations for the roads and recreation fields. The plan also will call for the building pad for a new Parks and Recreation building/office to be located off of Fairgrounds Ave. The Stool To Cool Task Force will continue to work with the engineer on costs. One item being considered is paving curbs for the parking lot areas. While this is very expensive to do, it does help with keeping whatever aggregate the City uses inside those lots, creating less staff maintenance time. Stay tuned for another update in December.
Council Retreat
The City Council will hold its next retreat on November 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Fire Hall. While the agenda will not be set until the week prior to the retreat, some possible items include water supply, electrical system future, and community housing needs. Retreats are public meetings open to all, just like any Council meeting!
