The preparedness message focuses on wildfires. Over the last several months, several wildfires have created challenges for Nebraskans. On September 13, a wildfire broke out in the Scottsbluff/Gering area and quickly engulfed 3,700 acres by the next day. Wildfires are dangerous because they can spread quickly, threatening lives, property, and livelihoods. Several of our colleagues are located in communities where wildfires have damaged or destroyed property and taken lives.
We can all do our part to prevent fires and do our best to prepare for a wildfire disaster. If a wildfire threatens, you may have little time to escape to safety. Do you have a plan in place? Whether you are at work, at a 4-H camp with youth, or at home, do you have an evacuation plan which includes escape routes away from the fire? Does everyone know where to meet? What is your communication plan? Is your “go bag” ready to take with you?
Take a look at your community and become familiar with more than one travel route to evacuate. Practice using these routes and review your evacuation plans for office, home, and school. If there is a wildfire threatening, listen to first responders and tune in to your local radio station or your community alerts resources.
