Hayley Long is spending her summer interning for Thurston County as a corrections officer in Pender, NE.

"My favorite experiences so far are interacting with the staff and inmates. The other officers are super supportive, and I learn a lot from each teammate daily. As for the inmates, every individual is different, and I enjoy learning about their lives. I have learned a lot already and have applied countless things I have learned in class directly to my job. Sitting through a lecture is one thing and experiencing it first-hand is another!"

ADVICE FOR FUTURE INTERNS: "Internships are a great way to experience and learn about a job you are considering in the future. Not only can you get class credit, but you figure out if that job is what you want to do. This could be your future career, so make sure you learn what you can, reflect on what you take in, and ultimately decide if you enjoy it! For me, this is my second internship. My first was at the State Penitentiary in Lincoln. I quickly found out I would not enjoy the state side of corrections and now I am doing one through a county. I absolutely love it and I wouldn't have learned this about myself if I didn't do the internships."
